Blu-Ray Discs and DVD's
One of the most common ways we watch movies at home is in the form of the DVD, or
digital video disc. It is a small compact disc that takes up very little space and delivers high quality
video. Recently, though, advances in technology have been made to improve on the DVD. The new
product is called a Blu-Ray Disc. It gets this name from the blue-violet laser used to read it. Instead
of the red laser used to read the DVD disc, the blue laser has a shorter wavelength, therefore the disc
has a higher capacity. Blu-Ray discs have enabled higher quality movies to be watched on HD TV's in
our own homes and larger, more detailed video games to be played on select systems. They require
a separate machine to play them than DVD discs need, but these Blu-ray disc players can also play DVD
discs.
3-D movies in the theaters.
Advances in technology have allowed theaters to show movies in 3-D, or in "3 dimensions". Only a
select number of films utilize this function, and they require a special screen to project onto. When you
buy a ticket for a 3-D movie, you are given a pair of glasses to view the movies in all their glory. They are rather
high quality glasses - nothing similar to the red, white, and blue glasses you would have used in the '50's! It
costs a couple extra bucks to see a 3-D movie, but they're very cool, so it's definitely worth it.
